Part 2 using your tools.

In this blog we are going to cover how to cut the model parts from the sprues.

I am going to build the classic Airfix Spitfire for this part of the blog.
This is a very simple kit it only has about 30 parts to it.

Before you start building any kit you need to give it a wash as the parts have a layer of release agent from the molds on them, if you do not clean this off it will affect any glue or paint you are going to apply to your model.

OK now on to cutting and preparing the parts for gluing, in the next few pictures I show you how to cut the parts form the sprues and test fit them before gluing.

When cutting the parts from the sprues there are some simple rules to follow I will do my best to explain these to you.

First of all you must never pull or twist the parts form the sprue as this will damage them! You must always cut them off with cutters or with a sharp hobby or craft knife as this will cause less damage to the part.

when cutting the parts it is best to cut the sprue next to the part as it is under tension, if you cut directly next to the part the spure will spring away from the part and possibly cause damage to the part!

I use a pair of mall side cutter for this.

Next to remove the part form the sprue I use a pair of flat faced cutters.

You must never cut to closely to the part! this may also cause damage to the part you are working with if you leave a small amount of sprue this will will help you to prevent damage to the part.

after the part is free from the sprue you can use a small knife or a scalpel blade to remove what is left of the sprue.

After you have removed the sprue you can use a file or a sanding pad to smooth the part down.

well that's it for now, next time we will go in to gluing the parts togther any comment or questions please do not be afraid to post them here.
